The project aims to qualify a NPS 12 Class 300 side entry trunnion mounted ball valve whose main pressure retaining components are produced applying the wire arc metal additive manufacturing technology. Design flexibility, reduction of material waste and final machining activities, rapid prototyping, shorter lead time, production delocalization, digital inventory are some of the drivers to demonstrate how additive manufacturing can be applied to a whole valve granting comparable quality level and performance of a valve produced via conventional manufacturing processes. The qualification procedure goes from extensive analyses in the design phase to accommodate the valve components shape to the additive manufacturing technique to both destructive and non-destructive tests following API 20S and API 6D rules to guarantee the expected quality level in the oil and gas industry. The final step of the validation will consist in a field trial period.
