The advances in laser-based powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) have enabled the processing of novel and challenging materials, including bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). These materials are characterized by their amorphous microstructure, which imparts advantageous technological properties, but requires rapid quenching. In this work, we present the application of high-speed imaging to the analysis of BMGs in PBF-LB/M. The focus is placed on capturing melt pool formation and material solidification and the following data extraction. This work discusses challenges of generating meaningful data through a comparative analysis of well-characterized stainless steel and less-understood glass-forming alloys.
